Fashion is the style and practice of wearing clothing, which can be categorized into different trends, looks, and styles. It can also refer to a particular way of dressing, or the design and appearance of one’s hair. Fashion is a cultural phenomenon, reflecting societal change and the ever-changing tastes of the population. It can be influenced by the mass media, celebrity and influential figures such as designers and celebrities.
Prior to the Industrial Revolution, making clothes was time consuming and laborious. With the invention of sewing machines and other technology, it became faster to make clothing and a new industry was born. During the Industrial Revolution, many styles and trends grew out of a desire to create functional clothing that was able to withstand everyday wear and tear.
Today, fashion is an international industry, fueled by globalization and a growing population with disposable incomes. It is believed that changes in fashion reflect a combination of societal influence and the financial interests of fashion designers, manufacturers and retailers. However, there is a significant body of research which indicates that fashion can be considered as an interlocking set of social and aesthetic practices.
Often, the lines between fashion and anti-fashion are blurred, as elements of culture that were once outside of changing tastes become swept along with trends. This can be seen in how tattoos and other expressions that were once associated with a subculture, like sailors, laborers or criminals, are now mainstream.
